Alastair Scrivener started bookbinding at Over Haddon Craft Centre, then branched out into selling second-hand books before moving to Higher Buxton to establish Scrivener's Books & Bookbinding.

Dating from 1890, the building was originally a shop with living accommodation. The cellar still houses the old kitchen range and stone sink. Here we have created a small Victorian museum, adding to the atmosphere of this five-storey building and preserving an important part of its history.

The bookbinding and book sales have grown apace and we now keep a huge stock of books, maps, prints and sheet music.

Alastair is the pivot, combining the roles of book-binder, bookseller, shelf-builder, artist, sculptor and sign writer, assisted by three bookbinders, a floating staff of six booksellers and a gardener.
